Databases vs. Search Engines

  • When using databases you know that the information is accurate and selected specifically for students & teachers.
  • Some databases link directly to state standards.
  • Some databases designate reading levels.
  • Some provide built-in dictionary and/or thesaurus.
  • Reduces the risk of Internet "surfing."
  • No ads.

Passwords:

Refer to the handout with list of databases & usernames/passwords.

  • Access to databases is only provided to schools with certified librarians.
  • Because the databases are paid for using state funds, they need to monitor usage by in-state patrons and, therefore, are password protected.
  • Sometimes in-school access will be provided without using the passwords (if the cookie is "set" in the server).
