Databases vs. Search Engines
- When using databases you know that the information is accurate and selected specifically for students & teachers.
- Some databases link directly to state standards.
- Some databases designate reading levels.
- Some provide built-in dictionary and/or thesaurus.
- Reduces the risk of Internet "surfing."
- No ads.
Passwords:
Refer to the handout with list of databases & usernames/passwords.
- Access to databases is only provided to schools with certified librarians.
- Because the databases are paid for using state funds, they need to monitor usage by in-state patrons and, therefore, are password protected.
- Sometimes in-school access will be provided without using the passwords (if the cookie is "set" in the server).
